Equity, Diversity & Inclusion

Our Commitment to Racial Equity and Inclusion

Mission Statement:

We enrich the cultural fabric of the bay area by presenting works that are relevant and entertaining to both audiences & artists and by educating and inspiring youth in the performing arts to enrich their lives.

In support of this Mission, Cinnabar confirms that:

  • We acknowledge that cultural biases and historic institutional racism (both conscious and unconscious) have benefitted some communities and limited opportunities for communities of color.
  • We acknowledge that we are products of our environment and of American history, past & present. We did not choose this history, but we can shape the future.
  • We strive to be a theater community where people of all backgrounds and identities are invited and offered the opportunity to share their stories and experiences.

Cinnabar Theater exists to support and enrich the cultural fabric of the community.

We do this by selecting and presenting performances that are thought provoking, relevant and entertaining to audiences and artists alike; and by educating, training and inspiring youth in the performing arts to enrich their lives and develop future artists and audiences.

We recognize that this work depends on everyone feeling welcome and empowered to contribute. We believe that by actively reaching out to expand our community we will find the strength that comes from being as diverse and inclusive as possible.

We affirm our commitment to look at our actions with a racial equity lens, so we can dismantle systemic racism in our community.

To foster racial equity & inclusion we commit our effort to:

Collaborate with local organizations serving communities of color to engage artists, actors, directors, designers, and teachers of color in Cinnabar programming.

Work to promote community voice, trust, and dignity; engaging all communities in a way that fosters trust among people across race, class, and gender lines in our effort to create artistic excellence.

Examine our organization-wide practices through a racial & gender equity lens understanding that things will change as we continue to grow in our understanding of equitable and inclusive practices.
