Girl of the Golden West

The Girl of the Golden West by Giacomo Puccini
by Giacomo Puccini

Oct. 20* (8:00), 21** (8:00), 28 (8:00), 29 (2:00) and Nov 1 (7:30), 3 (8:00), 5 (2:00), 8 (7:30), 10 (8:00) & 11 (8:00), 2006

Here's Puccini at his most surprising. He's created a RICHLY DRAMATIC LOVE STORY, and a sensual one at that, set against the outlaw days of the California Gold Rush. And what a "girl" our Minnie is! The quintessential frontier woman strong, independent and passionate as only a Puccini heroine can be, and years ahead of her time! Musically, this opera has all of the brilliant characteristics of Puccini's later works. Breathtaking percussive passages punctuate the score in complex, brilliant style, while sumptuous arias flow seamlessly throughout. It is a RARE MASTERPIECE that explores a full range of vocal color and characterization, and Puccini himself considered it his finest work

A double bill of Latin magic and passion!

First, Mascagni's fiery Italian tale of lust, jealousy and revenge, a combination of swift-moving drama and powerfully emotional music pure operatic excitement, full of tempestuous passions, smoldering jealousies and sweeping melodies.

Then it's off to Rodriguez' Mexico, where the same emotions are turned on their heads for a comic romp. Inspired by Mozart's Bastien and Bastienne, our sorcerer is a curandera, a Mexican practitioner of folk healing and magic. Spanish proverbs and idiomatic expressions abound, as well as actual incantations and rituals from Mexican folklore. Listen for homages to Mexico, mariachi and Mozart in Rodriguez' characteristic richly lyrical (Musical America) writing, full of the composer's 'all-encompassing sense of humor' (Los Angeles Times).

Enchanted April

Enchanted April by Matthew Barber

Based on the novel by Elizabeth von Arnim

The next best thing to taking a vacation. Four Englishwomen break free of their rain-drenched sorrows and oppression to delight in a month at a rented Italian castle, seeking the promise of better times and sunnier outlooks. Barber casts a warm, relaxed spell, guaranteed to bolster even the most sagging spirits. His superior character insight, poignancy and high comedy will keep audiences in thrall to the last moment! This is a superior 'feel good' play that doesn't manipulate, underestimate, or otherwise dupe its audience. Those looking for surprises, redemption and, yes, enchantment couldn't ask for better.

The Green Bird by Carlo Gozzi, adapted by Conrad Bishop
by Carlo Gozzi, adapted by Conrad Bishop

April 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 15, 2007

Here's a story with more delicious ingredients than a banana split! We have the foolish and broken-hearted king, a wife imprisoned under a sink and puppies substituted for babies. If that isn't enough, add a kindly chancellor, a hard-hearted mother and living statues. Sprinkle it all over with talking birds, singing apples and dancing waters and you only begin to touch on the magical fantasy about to unfold! The Green Bird is the tale of the long, hard and hilarious journey of two young people who must endure many trials of the flesh and spirit as they wade through the swamps of vanity, greed and longing, to gain a deeper understanding of life and love. Combining commedia dell'arte with wild imaginings and sharp social commentary, this rendering of Gozzi's elegant story will stay with you and your children long after the curtain rings down.

Cinnabar Theater presents BluebeardBluebeard by Jacques Offenbach
by Jacques Offenbach

April 27, 28, May 4, 5, 6, 11, 12, 13, 2007

Bluebeard? A Young Rep musical? You betcha! But this Bluebeard will leave you rolling in the aisles rather than gaping in horror. Bluebeard has just discovered his sixth wife in Boulotte, a feisty peasant girl. But no sooner has he wed once again than a shepherdess (actually, a princess in disguise) captures his fervid attention. She in turn is in love with another shepherd who turns out to be a prince. The two young royals are reunited when Bluebeard shows up, claiming that Boulotte has just died and he is now free to marry the princess. But, aha! Popolani, the alchemist charged with disposing of Bluebeard's past wives, has carefully preserved all six alive - and that's only the beginning! Hilarious characters, social satire and, of course, Offenbach's brilliant music all make this show a winner.

Tickets $12 general/$8 children 12 and under
