Lane, a brilliant
physician, has troubles. For one, her housekeeper, Matilde, hates to clean.
Instead this Brazilian comedienne, whose parents literally “died laughing,” prefers
to use her energy trying to pen the perfect joke. As if “bad help” isn’t
enough, Lane’s surgeon husband reveals he has found his soul mate, or
"bashert" in a cancer patient named Anna. All the while Lane’s
eccentric sister is sneaking into her home to clean allowing Matilde to
scribble away on her stand-up routine. This theatrical and wildly funny play is
a whimsical and poignant look at class, comedy and the true nature of love.
"Fresh, funny
... a memorable play, imbued with a melancholy but somehow comforting
philosophy: that the messes and disappointments of life are as much a part of
its beauty as romantic love and chocolate ice cream, and a perfect punch line
can be as sublime as the most wrenchingly lovely aria." — NY Times.

Menotti's
opera The Consul is a nightmare-thriller of an opera, set in the midst
of civil unrest where the central character, Magda, is trying to flee the
country and in need of a visa from an unseen and unheard consul. The Consul won both the Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Circle Critics' Award when
it debuted in 1954, enthralling critics and audiences alike with its powerful
combination of melodic score and heartbreaking story. The dark and gritty
post-verismo score is gripping, using contemporary touches and a fantasy
element that sit beside the thriller tension. This is music-theatre of
unnerving power.

Morris and Ursula Pieper

Remember
what it was like to be a teenager in love? Oh, the pain, the tragedy of it all!
Mozart’s outwardly comical masterwork reminds us that our most cherished
relationships can often be fragile and tenuous. Through the use of subterfuge,
dubious allies and hidden identities, the fidelity of two young sisters is
tested by their fiancés with a rather surprising outcome.

private lives (comedy)

Director: Elizabeth Craven
Run Dates: May 23* (8:00), 24 (8:00), 30

A
classic comedy of bad manners, dry humor and quicksilver sparring that is both
daringly hilarious and elegantly sexy. Did anyone ever live with as much style and
wit as Amanda Prynne and Elyot Chase, the dueling lovers in Private Lives?
Noel Coward did, and it's Coward we have to thank for the sustained hilarity of
this classic comedy. Two bickering ex-spouses fall in love all over again while
honeymooning with their newly minted marriage partners. See why Private
Lives has been an audience favorite since its London premiere in 1930.
