Back by popular demand: brilliant jazz singer Kim Nalley reprises her sell-out musical, the essential American story of Ella Fitzgerald’s rise to stardom. Ella was homeless, a bedraggled vagrant who danced in the streets for meager handouts. How did a homeless New York street dancer become America’s First Lady of Song? Set in 1930’s Harlem, Ella: the American Dream features the swinging music of Ella Fitzgerald, finger popping dance reminiscent of the Savoy and appearances by Chick Webb, Frankie Manning and more. Based on new historical findings about Ella’s humble beginnings, this play will leave you feeling optimistic and yearning for more. Single Tickets: Presale $35 General, $32 Senior & for our Under 30’s $25, At the Door $35 for all. Subscription: save 20%.
Travels With My Aunt September 24 – October 17
Veteran American Conservatory actor/director Ken Ruta, who appeared in the ACT production years ago, directs this theatrical distillation of Graham Greene’s novel. Retired bank manager Henry Pulling, “a rather static character,” as he says of himself, is so bound to habit that the death and funeral of his mother offer a “agreeably exciting” break in routine. Enter Aunt Augusta, and Henry’s life turns completely topsy-turvy with murder, mayhem, round-the-world travel and - love. Single Tickets: Presale $25 General, $22 Senior & for our Under 30’s $15, At the Door $25 for all. Subscription: save 20%.
Dracula/The Medium November 5 – November 21
Join Cinnabar for an exploration of our darker, scarier side. We are thrilled to premiere playwright and screenwriter Eric Overmyer’s Dracula. Overmyer, who writes hit HBO shows The Wire and this year’s Treme, returns to the live stage after a 17-year absence just for Cinnabar. Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Medium, inspired by a séance experience, is an eerie blend of murder and the supernatural. Single Tickets: Presale $35 General, $32 Senior & for our Under 30’s $25, At the Door $35 for all. Subscription: save 20%.
Woody Guthrie’s: American Song December 31 – January 16
Legendary folk singer Woody Guthrie wrote songs about hard times - the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl, high unemployment, and war. But he also sang about the joy of being alive and being an American. This stirring musical follows Guthrie as he rambles coast to coast from California to the New York Islands, and features over two dozen of his most famous songs, including “Bound for Glory” and “This Land Is Your Land.” Single Tickets: Presale $35 General, $32 Senior & for our Under 30’s $25, At the Door $35 for all. Subscription: save 20%.
Ernest in Love March 25 – April 17
Based on Oscar Wilde’s beloved comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest, this delightful musical adaptation received an acclaimed revision last year at New York’s famed Irish Rep. Cinnabar stages the West Coast revision premiere, complete with tea dance-style orchestra, Wildean hi-jinks and laughs galore. Single Tickets: Presale $35 General, $32 Senior & for our Under 30’s $25, At the Door $35 for all. Subscription: save 20%.
Enchanted April May 27-June 18
Four Englishwomen break free of their rain-drenched sorrows and oppression to delight in a month at a rented Italian castle, seeking the promise of better times and sunnier outlooks. Playwright Matthew Barber casts a warm, relaxed spell, guaranteed to bolster even the most sagging spirits. His superior character insight, poignancy and high comedy will keep audiences in thrall to the last moment! This is a superior “feel good” play that doesn’t manipulate or underestimate its audience. Those looking for surprises, redemption and, yes, “enchantment” couldn’t ask for better. Single Tickets: Presale $25 General, $22 Senior & for our Under 30’s $15, At the Door $25 for all. Subscription: save 20%.
